Summary:
The USS Maine was built at a U.S. Naval yard and was the first United States battleship to be built. It took about nine years to build, and three of those nine years had been waiting on the armor plating. The USS Maine was the largest vessel to be built at a U.S. Navy yard. The explosion of the USS Maine led to a outbreak of the Spanish American war in April 1898. There were some advantages and some disadvantages for the ship. A disadvantage was the type of vessel it had and bunkers that they used for additional armor and protection. When the USS Maine was finally launched and loaded with supplies it was found that the bow had a draft three feet greater than the stern. The Maine did not have a good coal capacity though it only held 895 tons of coal. The blowing up of the ship was a critical event on the road to the Spanish American War. The destruction of the Maine did not cause the U.S. to declare war on Spain. The sinking and deaths of the U.S. sailors rallied Americans more strongly behind armed interventions. The Congress voted funds for the removal of the wreck of the Maine form Havana Harbor. The U.S. engineers built a dam around the sunken battleship. The Cubans began a ten year rebellion against there Spanish overlords. Cubans were very angry over the rebellion and took action. After awhile the began a series of riots in the Havana area. This concerned the American citizens and business interests in the area so they sent a warship to the city. So McKinley passed his request to the Navy about the second class battleship. One night the Harbor was lit by a massive explosion that ripped through the forward section of the Maine with five tons of powder. Immediately assistance came to help by sending two boats circling the burning remains of the battleship to collect the survivors. A total of deaths were 252 with another eight dying ashore in the days that followed. Throughout the whole war the Spanish showed great compassion for the injured and respect for the dead American sailors. To investigate the loss of the Maine the navy swiftly formed a board of teams. Their investigation was not as successful as they thought it would be. But on March 28 the board announced that the ship had been sunk by a naval mine.
